Department of History
Welcome to the Department of History at 91°µÍø! We are proud to be among the largest producers of undergraduate history majors anywhere in the nation. Undergraduates may pursue the B.A. degree in History, while students interested in medical professions may pursue the B.S. in History degree. We likewise host one of the oldest and most respected online MA in History degrees, together with the 18 Hour Certificate in U.S. History, specifically designed for secondary educators hoping to gain the credentials necessary to teach dual credit courses. Our Public History Internship Program offers for-credit, hands-on experiences at a variety of historical sites, cultural institutions, and public museums. Our Oral History Initiative is helping to record the history of Sam Houston State and the surrounding region. Finally, we are proud to host the Medical and Health Humanities Minor, an interdisciplinary program whose development is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Our faculty of award-winning scholar-teachers has produced more than twenty books and dozens of articles in the last decade. With research interests including Black civil rights; migration and cross-cultural exchange; religion and politics; urban space and the environment; and the lived, human experience of war, the Department of History is committed to innovative scholarship, student engagement, and pedagogical excellence.
