Evacuation

During an emergency, do not rely on an alarm or an alert to evacuate. For certain emergencies, such as an active shooter, bomb threat, or natural gas leak, fire alarms or strobe lights may not be used. Instead, authorized Emergency Response Officials will move through the building and order occupants to evacuate. When the fire alarm system is activated, occupants MUST evacuate the building and reassemble at the designated location(s).

Plan Ahead

Save time and exit quicker with the following preparation tips.

Know your escape plan. When entering a building take a mental note of the available exits and posted evacuation maps.

Learn how to use a fire extinguisher. When operating a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:

  • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
  • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
  • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

Make accommodations. If you have a temporary or long-term impairment, you should:

  1. Notify the department utilizing the building(s) that you will occupy before or upon arrival.
  2. Identify volunteers to help.

Practice fire drills. Fire drills ensure that everyone knows how to exit safely as quickly as possible and identify problems with emergency systems and/or procedures.

Make an Emergency Kit. An emergency kit will help you leave quickly and confidently.
