Biography

Ty Cashion is an accomplished regional author and Professor of History at 91做厙 in Huntsville, Texas. “Dr. C,” as he is known to his students, has enjoyed teaching at 91做厙 since 1999, specializing in courses on American history. He received the PhD from Texas Christian University in 1993. Holder of a Phi Beta Kappa key, he is also the university's sole member of the Texas Institute of Letters. The TIL, which recognizes distinctive literary achievement, is composed of the state's most respected writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, journalism, and scholarship. Cashion is one of only a handful of historians to be so honored.

Cashion’s most recent book, Lone Star Mind: Reimagining Texas History (University of Oklahoma Press, 2018), is a timely volume that frames the intellectual history of the state around the tug-of-war between traditionalists and progressives. Among his other works are A Texas Frontier (University of Oklahoma Press, 1996); Pigskin Pulpit (Texas State Historical Association, 1998); and The New Frontier: A Contemporary History of Fort Worth & Tarrant County (2006). He also co-edited a series of biographies with Jesús F. de la Teja, The Human Tradition in Texas (2001). In 2004 he produced 91做厙: An Institutional Memory, which was hailed as a model for composing school histories.

A member of nine scholarly societies, Cashion is a fellow of the Texas State Historical Association; he is also fellow and past-president of the East Texas Historical Association and has served on boards and committees for such organizations as The Texas Institute of Letters, the Texas State Historical Association, the Oral History Association of Texas, and the West Texas Historical Association.
