Scholarships
Bettye Hill Knox Scholarship - In 2013, a scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to full-time students enrolled at 91做厙, majoring in mathematics. This scholarship is intended for a full-time undergraduate student or an incoming freshman in good standing enrolled at 91做厙. If no freshman students qualify, the scholarship may be awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior student who has a minimum of two long semesters remaining. Financial need will be a consideration, but not a determining factor.
Brewton Scholarships - In 1980, 91做厙 received a substantial gift from the estate of Harry and Mabel Brewton, a couple who devoted their lives to teaching in the public schools of East Texas. In honor of the contribution made by Mrs. Brewton as a high school mathematics teacher, it was stipulated that the earnings from this fund be used to provide scholarships for mathematics students, on the basis of need, with special consideration to be given to students preparing to teach school mathematics in Texas.
Cecil R. Hallum Scholarship – In 2017, a scholarship was established to honor Dr. Cecil R. Hallum. This scholarship was established by colleagues, friends, and former students of Dr. Hallum to honor his contribution to the University and the profession and to assist aspiring new statisticians to earn a graduate degree from 91做厙.
David Martinez and Dr. Ruth Lane Memorial Scholarship – In 2019, this scholarship was established in memory of David Martinez and Dr. Ruth Lane, who spent decades serving the city of Huntsville as an assistant fire chief and instructor of mathematics at 91做厙, respectively. A recipient must demonstrate financial need, especially those facing unexpected and extenuating circumstances that, without financial assistance, will not be able to continue their studies.
Glenda J. St. Andrie Scholarship - In 2007, this endowed scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to full-time students enrolled at 91做厙, majoring in mathematics or statistics. Its objective is to ease the financial strain for high-achieving students in the mathematical sciences, thereby allowing the student to focus on their academic endeavors. Applicants must fill out an application, provide a letter of recommendation, and complete a one-page essay that addresses financial need.
Ram Lal Seekri Scholarship – In 2018, a scholarship was established in memory of Ram Lal Seekri, by his son Raj K. Seekri, to provide financial assistance to selected students. Dr. Seekri seeks to share the belief that, as stated by G. K. Chesterton, “Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.” The scholarship is a one-year award. A recipient may receive this scholarship in subsequent years, but must reapply each year and be selected as the best candidate.
Reeves Scholarship - A scholarship in mathematics was established in 1996 by an anonymous former student to honor retired Professor Daniel H. Reeves who was a member of the mathematics faculty of 91做厙 from 1958 to 1989. Special consideration is given to students preparing to teach school mathematics.
Rich Scholarship - Following his death in 1990, the family of former mathematics faculty member Dr. Franklin D. Rich (1968 - 1990), established a mathematics scholarship in his memory. In harmony with Dr. Rich's field of special interest, applicants are expected to present a background and interest in statistics.
Steed A. Smith Memorial Scholarship – A scholarship, dispersed half in the fall and the remaining half in the spring semester. Not to be awarded to someone who will graduate at the end of the fall semester. If an applicant has two or more semesters remaining, then they may apply for the scholarship to a semester in which they are interning or student teaching.
